چکیده

We report on the “mid-term” results obtained in the frame of the European FLEXCELLENCE project (www.unine.ch/flex). FLEXCELLENCE aims at developing the equipment and the processes for cost-effective roll-to-roll production of high-efficiency thin-film modules, based on amorphous (a-Si:H) and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H). Eight partners, with extended experience in complementary fields ranging from device simulation to machinery development, are involved. During this first part of the project several milestones were achieved: Setting-up and operation of roll–to-roll systems for deposition of solar cells by micro-wave PECVD, Hot-wire and VHF PECVD. Fabrication of high quality nanotextured substrates both on plastic foils and on metal foils with insulation. Achievement of high efficiency devices on textured plastic substrates with initial efficiencies of 8.8%, 8.6% and 10.9% for amorphous silicon, microcrystalline and tandem micromorph cells, respectively. Improvement in interconnection technologies, module encapsulation and reliability. Demonstration of the possibility to reach ultra-low cost (< 0.6 €/Wp) if high efficiency micromorph concepts can be realised in production. Successful integration by one of the partners of new high-throughput VHF-electrodes and move to module massproduction. Thanks to the collaborative nature of the project, important steps towards the goal of mass-production of high efficiency thin film Si modules have consequently been realised.

Latest Results on Stabilized Flexible Thin Film Silicon Solar Cells

Our primary goal is to increase the stabilized efficiency of thin film silicon solar cells in the substrate (nip) configuration by using textured substrates and tandem structures, based on amorphous (a-Si:H) and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H). In order to reduce costs of mass-produced thin film solar modules, special attention has been paid in developing processes compatible with plastic fo...

Flexible Microcrystalline Silicon Solar Cells on Periodically Textured Plastic Substrates

Roll-to-roll processing of thin film solar cells on flexible low cost substrates is an attractive option to lower the production cost of photovoltaic modules. Plastic substrates like PET or PEN are insulating which potentially offers advantages compared to conducting steel foils. However, plastic substrates require lower processing temperatures and novel schemes for efficient light trapping. In...

Spray-on Thin Film PV Solar Cells: Advances, Potentials and Challenges

The capability to fabricate photovoltaic (PV) solar cells on a large scale and at a competitive price is a milestone waiting to be achieved. Currently, such a fabrication method is lacking because the effective methods are either difficult to scale up or expensive due to the necessity for fabrication in a vacuum environment. Nevertheless, for a class of thin film solar cells, in which the solar...
